Sample from “The Isley Brothers, “Ain’t I Been Good to You”
We’ve all heard gripes with southern hip hop in the past. They rap too slow, know one cares about what their saying, “I can’t identify with this”. Well frankly, the sub genre is the most under appreciated in hip hop today, and no one knows southern hip hop better than the Underground Kings themselves, UGK. The Port Arthur group did their thing for two decades until Pimp C‘s untimely overdoes and death. “One Day” is a heart wrenching track about loss in the lives of the group members. Weather it’s losing a friend for years in jail or losing a loved one in a terrible accident, in one day our closest friends could become memories. I love the pace and the length of this track. Yeah the they rap slow, but the music hits so much harder as a result.
